  1. How Easily Fooled Are You?

by on 03-02-2010 at 07:49 PM (From The Brain of sysop_host ...)
This post actually relates to something that took place before Christmas. I have briefly touched on this event* but I decided it needed some proper attention.

Just before the Christmas break* a lecturer at my uni approached myself and two other friends of mine to ask if we would be willing to participate in a bit of a challenge. The task at hand was to set up a rogue access point ready for a lecture on network security for second year students. At the time we accepted this challenge* ...

  2. Project: Progress Thus Far...

by on 08-01-2010 at 04:05 PM (From The Brain of sysop_host ...)
With all the snow preventing me from travelling to uni* I have had a lot of spare time with which to work on my final year project. I have actually made good progress with it* reaching a point that I could consider as a beta release of the application.

Currently it does only have limited support for file reading and there are a few bugs and edges that need polishing* however the majority of functionality is there. Files and file names can be previewed in audio format* files can ...

  3. Not Dead (Yet)

by on 23-12-2009 at 04:21 PM (From The Brain of sysop_host ...)
Firstly I must apologise for the large gap in posting* I have been busy with a number of things lately.

Most of my spare time has been dedicated to working on my final year project. I am aiming to develop a file recovery application* with the added twist of text to speech transposition. I am now in the process of stitching together the ...

  4. F3 - Final Thoughts

by on 21-11-2009 at 09:17 PM (From The Brain of sysop_host ...)
Last week spent at F3* courtesy of Disklabs* was especially eventful. Not only did I get to chance to meet a number of very interesting new people* I was also given the opportunity to learn a great deal from professionals in the forensic field.

I will begin by mentioning the amazing hotel* not only was it a picturesque location* but the building itself also doubled as a Faraday cage* meaning twitter was the only reliable form of communication.

The quiz on the opening ...

  5. Digital Forensics + VMware View = ?

by on 03-11-2009 at 05:55 PM (From The Brain of sysop_host ...)
I was thinking today* what kind of forensic evidence could be recovered from a virtual machine. This then got me thinking* what happens if the virtual machine in question is actually a non-persistent virtual machine that has been replicated from a template using VMware View?

In theory* once the machine is no longer necessary* or if it expires* it should be "deleted". Now we all know that data that has been "deleted" can be recovered. But the twist here is* the ...
